Highly honoured and deeply excited I am joining SKLAD’s team as an Artistic Director!

Beside the fact that Skopje is one of my favorite places, the chance to interact with light and art in the urban environment that is so special and unique is such an amazing and inspiring situation.

Following the success of last year’s edition, Skopje Light Art District spreads its creative tentacles even further and deeper this time, to connect more places, to meet more people and to tell new stories…

SKLAD remains as a symbolic bridge, a vivid link that unites art, technology, science, architecture, nature, past, present and future, by using the language of light. In this year’s edition we are presenting 26 local and international artists, musicians, artist collectives, performance groups and theater troupes who will create an immersive light path connecting distant points of Skopje Old Bazaar with the green oasis of the Skopje City Park.Around 20 locations are fascinating light points on this path,to offer visitors a thrilling experience with light art works, interactive installations, light & music live acts, video mapping projections and performances.

Follow the SKLAD light path starting from historical site of Kurshimli An through the picturesque streets of Skopje Old Bazaar, visit the impressive Daut Pasha’s Hamam, passing by the exciting architecture of the Opera house, walk the ancient Stone Bridge over the Vardar River, take a turn to the right into the avenue of trees, through the Parc de la Francophonie and right into the heart of Skopje City Park. Following the example of the light festivals around Europe, for the first time in Skopje, from October 6th to October 9th, Skopje Light Art District will allow the visitors unique experience, filled with light and lots of color.

Skopje Light Art District is meant to be a new cultural and social event, one which will have its opening on the start of the traditional White Night. The idea for the festival is to introduce little more light and color in the everyday life we all live and to show us the nice, colorful side of the life. All the visitors will have the opportunity to be part of a new, intriguing and unusual experience.

These kinds of festivals are common in Europe and the world, but the main idea for Skopje Light Art Festival emerged from the ROCK project, project of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program. In that project, the City of Skopje on cultural level is partnered with 11 other cities of the EU. One of those cities is Lyon in France, a city with one of the historically oldest festivals of light in the world, which served as a direct inspiration for Skopje Light Art District. On the festival this year 15 artists from home and abroad will exhibit their works with various light installations, mainly positioned in the Old Skopje Bazaar. The artists that will exhibit have already participated in numerous light festival around the world.

The opening of the festival starts at 20:00 on October 6th, with a light projection and 3D mapping projected on the facade on the “Ibni Pajko” building, on the entrance of the Old Skopje Bazaar. This years’ motto of the festival is “Follow the path”. Once the visitors arrive on the place of the projection, they will find out the directions on which the ‘path’ will take place and where they could see the installations in the next three days. The opening will finish at 23:00 in the Museum of Contemporary Art with interactive audio-visual performance.
